Spooky Flames: Mega Charizard X vs. Mega Gengar
Spooky Flames is the second major expansion in the Mega Evolution series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released on November 14, 2025 by The Pokémon Company. The set features an epic battle between Mega Charizard X-ex, the Dragon-type Pokémon from Kanto in its black Mega-Evolved form, and Mega Gengar-ex, the Legendary Ghost-type Pokémon from the first generation. The title Spooky Flames reflects this narrative duality between roaring fire and spectral darkness, which structures the visual and thematic identity of the expansion.
The six Mega-Pokémon-ex of the set
Fantastic Flames contains six brand-new Mega-Pokémon-ex, which are the most powerful and sought-after cards in the set. Mega Charizard X-ex is the cover card and features the expansion's visual identity. Mega Gengar-ex represents the second narrative focus with a dominant Ghost-type presence. The roster is rounded out by Mega Diancie-ex (Rock-Fairy), Mega Lopunny-ex (Steel-Fighting), Mega Heracross-ex (Bug-Fighting), and Mega Sharpedo-ex (Water-Dark). These six Mega Evolutions are accompanied by a rich competitive ecosystem built around the themes of Fire, Darkness, and Ghost.
Mega Attack Rare: A brand-new rarity with attack names in Japanese katakana
Spooky Flames is the first expansion in the Mega Evolution series to introduce an entirely new rarity: the Mega Attack Rare (MA). This rarity is immediately recognizable by a strong visual and cultural detail: the attack names on the relevant cards are written in Japanese katakana in both the French and international versions, accompanied by spectacular visual effects. This is a stylistic choice unprecedented in the history of the Pokémon TCG, bringing the game's aesthetic closer to its Japanese roots. Mega Charizard X-EX, in particular, has a Mega Attack Rare version that is exceptionally sought after by collectors.
Unique Manga Style: 5 SARs, 15 Alternate SARs, and 13 ARs Phantasmagorical Flames also stands out thanks to its strong graphic style on its rare cards. The set includes 5 Special Art Rares (SARs), 15 Alternate SARs, and 13 Art Rares (ARs) rendered in a manga style never before seen in the French TCG. These illustrations are directly inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese comic book panels, with dynamic framing and accentuated contrasts that bring the cards closer to the anime universe. Several of these illustrations have become major chase cards of the set on the secondary market.
The Elite Trainer Box Elite Flames Promo Card
The ETB Fantasmagorique Flames Elite Trainer Box includes a fully illustrated shiny promo card Pentacled Charmeleon (reference MEP FR 022), exclusive to this product. Charmeleon is the intermediate evolution of the Charmander-Pentacled Charmeleon-Charizard lineage, creating a strong narrative link with Mega Charizard X-EX, the expansion's flagship card. The set also includes 9 Fantasmagorical Flames booster packs (10 cards each), 65 Mega Charizard X themed card sleeves, 40 Energy cards, a player's guide, 6 damage counter dice, a coin-flip die, a plastic coin, a collector's box with 4 dividers, and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live.
Four Collector Booster Art: The Fantasmagorical Flames Art Set
Fantasmagorical Flames features several different booster pack illustrations, each showcasing a key Pokémon from the set. The booster art set includes a copy of each variant for collectors who want to complete the set's visual series in an original sealed format.
The Sneasel & Weavile Tripack Bundle
The Sneasel & Weavile Tripack Bundle features two themed blisters illustrated with the evolutionary lineage of Sneasel and Weavile, Dark/Ice-type Pokémon that perfectly complement the Ghost and Darkness theme of Spooky Flames. Each tripack contains three booster packs from the expansion. The bundle of two tripacks combines both Sneasel and Weavile artwork for collectors who want both variants in a single order.
Play! Prereleases Pokémon
Before its official release on November 14, 2025, Fantasmagorical Flames was available as a preview at Play! Pokémon tournaments held in select independent stores starting November 1, 2025. These previews allowed players to test the new cards in Sealed Deck format with a pre-constructed deck and several booster packs from the expansion, and to receive exclusive event promotions.
Other Available Formats
In addition to the Elite Trainer Box, the art set, and the three-pack bundle, the Fantasmagorical Flames line is available in two classic opening formats.
