Pokémon TCG: The World's Best-Selling Trading Card Game
Since its creation in 1996, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has established itself as the most widely distributed TCG in history, with over 52 billion cards sold worldwide (figure from The Pokémon Company, 2024). The principle is simple: two players battle with decks built around Pokémon, Energy, and Trainer cards. Each Pokémon needs a specific type of Energy to use its attacks, and managing these Energy cards makes all the difference between a successful deck and one that falters.
The game is constantly evolving. The Pokémon Company releases several expansions each year, each with new cards, new mechanics, and new artwork. Pokémon-ex, Full Art cards, special rare illustrations, and Illustration Rares make each expansion a major event for collectors.
Collecting Pokémon Cards: Rarity and Artwork
Each Pokémon TCG expansion is structured by rarity levels: common, uncommon, rare, double rare, ultra rare, art rare, and special rare. The illustrators who work on Pokémon cards are followed by the entire community. Mitsuhiro Arita, who designed the Charizard from the Base Set in 1996, continues to design cards today. HYOGONOSUKE, Akira Komayama, Naoki Saito, and Sowsow have become names that collectors actively seek out.
Japanese (JPN) and Chinese (CHN) imports are particularly prized for their exclusive artwork, which is unavailable on the European market. Some special expansions are only released in Asia, making them all the more sought after by French-speaking collectors.
Pokémon TCG Products Available at DestockTCG
We offer all formats of sealed Pokémon products: individual booster packs in French for opening or drafting, Elite Trainer Boxes (ETB) which contain 9 booster packs plus game accessories, and displays of 36 booster packs for the Wholesale openings, the metal Pokébox Tins, the premium sets with exclusive content, and the preconstructed decks to get you started.
For collectors looking beyond the French market, we have a selection of Asian imports (Japan, China). Japanese products are especially appealing to those who want artwork unavailable in Europe or expansions exclusive to the Asian market.
Playing the Pokémon TCG: Formats and Competition The Pokémon TCG is primarily played in the Standard format, which only allows recent expansions (generally those released in the last two years). This is the format used in official tournaments (Pokémon Organized Play). The Expanded format accepts a larger card pool. The basic rules can be learned in one game, but deck building and understanding the metagame require experience. Local tournaments (League Challenges, League Cups) are organized in stores, and regional and international Championships attract thousands of players each year.
