Pokémon TCG: The World's Best-Selling Trading Card Game
Since its creation in 1996, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has established itself as the most widely distributed TCG in history, with over 52 billion cards sold worldwide (figure from The Pokémon Company, 2024). The principle is simple: two players battle with decks built around Pokémon, Energy, and Trainer cards. Playing the Pokémon TCG: Formats and Competition The Pokémon TCG is primarily played in the Standard format, which only allows recent expansions (generally those released in the last two years). This is the format used in official tournaments (Pokémon Organized Play). The Expanded format accepts a larger card pool. The basic rules can be learned in one game, but deck building and understanding the metagame require experience. Local tournaments (League Challenges, League Cups) are organized in stores, and regional and international Championships attract thousands of players each year.
