Magic: The Gathering, the Original Collectible Card Game
Magic: The Gathering is the first collectible card game ever created. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast since 1993, it laid the foundation for everything that followed in the world of TCGs. More than thirty years after its release, Magic remains one of the most played card games in the world with over 50 million players. The game is published in French under the name Magic l'Assemblée.
How does Magic: The Gathering work? Each player takes on the role of a Planeswalker and builds a deck around five mana colors: white, blue, black, red, and green. Each color has its own philosophy and mechanics. White protects and strengthens, blue controls and manipulates, black sacrifices and destroys, red attacks and burns, and green accelerates and deploys massive creatures. Decks can play a single color or combine several.
The game revolves around mana management (the lands played each turn) and constant interaction between players. Unlike most other TCGs, Magic allows players to react during their opponent's turn thanks to the instant and flash abilities system. This element makes every game different, even between two identical decks.
Magic Game Formats
Magic is played in several formats, each with its own deck-building rules. Standard only allows recent expansions. Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy expand the available card pool with increasing power levels. Commander (also called EDH) is the most popular tabletop format: each deck consists of 100 different cards built around a legendary commander. Commander games are often played with 3 or 4 players, making it a popular format for casual evenings with friends. Wizards of the Coast also organizes a professional competitive circuit with the Regional Championships and the Pro Tour.
Universes Beyond: Magic Crossovers
For several years now, Wizards of the Coast has been publishing Universes Beyond expansions that combine Magic with other licenses. The Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, Marvel Spider-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Airbender: these sets use Magic rules with cards featuring characters from other universes. The Universes Beyond expansions are playable in Commander, Modern, and Legacy formats.
The Hobbit: Return to Middle-earth in August 2026
Following the success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth expansion released in 2023, Wizards of the Coast returns to Tolkien's universe with Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit, scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. This new Universes Beyond expansion will follow the journey of Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield's company to the Lonely Mountain. We will list The Hobbit products (Play Booster displays, Collector Booster, Commander decks) as soon as they become available from our distributors.
