Pokémon Elite Trainer Box
The ETB, the official showcase for Pokémon collectors
Beyond the booster packs it contains, an ETB is a collector's item in its own right. Designed and produced by The Pokémon Company International under direct license, it brings together graphic and physical elements that you won't find in any other Pokémon TCG distribution format: not in Displays, Booster Boxes, Tins, or Blisters. It's the only way to obtain the complete official packaging of an expansion.
Exclusive elements found only in ETBs
Sleeves featuring the expansion's artwork (usually 65 units): visuals printed specifically for that set, which are never reprinted after the end of the sales cycle. ETB sleeves for 151, Prism Evolutions, and Destinies of Paldea have already become sought-after items in mint condition.
Exclusive promo card: Some expansions include a holographic or alternate-art card that is only distributed via the ETB. Older ETB promos (Pikachu V ETB Sparkling Stars, Mew ex 151) are now listed individually on collector markets.
Rigid storage box matching the set's design: A display item in itself, perfectly sized to fit in a binder or on a glass shelf.
Damage counters and status markers in the set's colors, with official logos.
Illustrated strategy guide: A small booklet printed in high definition with the official artwork. A novelty item today, but a collector's item in 10 years.
A long history: ETBs as witnesses to a Pokémon generation. The Elite Trainer Box format has existed since the mid-2010s from The Pokémon Company International. Each generation of the game (Black & White, XY, Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Purple) has produced around twenty distinct ETBs, transforming this initial launch product into a visual archive of the TCG's graphic evolution. The older ETBs (Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield era) are now documented on collector wikis as essential pieces for a serious Pokémon collection.
Keeping a Sealed ETB in Good Condition
To preserve the value of a sealed ETB:
Never remove the original shrink wrap. Its presence is a crucial marker of authenticity for future resale.
Avoid direct exposure to UV light: the colors printed on the cardboard will fade over several years of sun exposure.
Temperature and Humidity: Store between 18 and 22°C in moderate humidity. The cardboard will warp above 60% relative humidity.
Do not stack under load: a crushed ETB will deform on its sides, a defect immediately visible in photos.
Glass or Mylar protection is recommended for ETBs intended for long-term storage or grading (PSA and Beckett offer authentication services for sealed products).
Open or keep sealed: two schools of thought
Among collectors, two approaches coexist:
"Sealed collectors" keep the ETB intact in its original packaging for its authenticity and potential for appreciation over 5-10 years. Some sealed Sword & Shield ETBs now sell for several times their original price.
"Openers" open the ETB to access the accessories (sleeves, box, promos) and build their collection card by card. The box and sleeves then retain significant secondary value.
An opened ETB instantly loses approximately 30 to 50% of its sealed collector value. This is a decision to make before purchasing.
Why Pokémon Dominates the Global TCG Market
Since 2022-2023, the Pokémon TCG has become the world's leading collectible card game in terms of revenue, surpassing Magic: The Gathering. This momentum fuels secondary demand for sealed products, of which ETBs (Extra Trading Cards) constitute one of the most structured and liquid segments. The most sought-after expansions (151, Fates of Paldea, Prism Evolutions) are already permanently sold out at most official retailers.
