Opening ten Play Boosters from the same set offers a very different perspective than a single booster. With 140 cards, the set allows you to see firsthand how the seven new mechanics of Secrets of Strixhaven interact with each other and with the two returning mechanics of the set.
Secrets of Strixhaven introduces Opus, Increment, Repartee, Prepare, Infusion, Paradigm, and Book, each tied to the philosophy of one or more colleges. Opus, for example, rewards the accumulation of noncreature spells in the creative vein of Prismari. Increment translates Quandrix's mathematical approach into increasing benefits. Repartee captures the verbal duel characteristic of Silverquill. Prepare and Infusion facilitate the gradual power-up favored by Lorehold and Witherbloom. Paradigm and Book provide cross-sector strategic avenues that encourage multi-colored deck builds. Flashback and Converge return as support mechanics. Flashback, already present in the original 2021 Strixhaven, returns to its natural place in a set focused on instants and sorceries. Converge rewards the diversity of mana spent, an approach consistent with the color pairs of the colleges. It's worth noting that Lessons, the iconic mechanic of the first Strixhaven, do not return as a featured mechanic. Ten boosters statistically cover a representative sample of the five colleges and their mechanical interactions. This is the ideal volume for a player who wants to understand the set's architecture before committing to deckbuilding.
