The 5 pairs in detail:
Each pair was designed around a Kalos Pokémon or a Pokémon associated with the Lumiose City universe. Meganium (3rd generation Grass-type starter), Rotorfu (Hoenn Fire-type starter), and Feraligatr (Johto Water-type starter) are references to the Mega Evolutions of classic starters, expected in Pokémon Legends Z-A. Salamence and Gallade round out the roster with two pseudo-legendary Pokémon often associated with strong narrative arcs. Opposite them, Litleo, Mawile, Sepiatop, Budew, and Goomy directly recall the iconic Pokémon of Generation 6 introduced with Kalos.
