The Hobbit Prerelease Kit is the format dedicated to Magic: The Gathering prerelease events, available one week before the official release of the set. It contains six The Hobbit Play Boosters, one standard premium rare or mythic rare card stamped with the prerelease date (Prerelease promo), and a Spindown life counter themed after the set. Each Play Booster includes 14 Magic cards drawn from the HOB range 1-248, with one standard premium card and at least one card of rare or higher rarity. This set is Magic's second adventure in Middle-earth, following The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (LTR) released in 2023, and adapts J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
The Prerelease Kit is the ideal format for participating in Sealed Deck tournaments held in stores during the Prerelease weekend, or for opening the set early with a balanced mix of discovery and deckbuilding. The expansion revolves around the return of the Adventure mechanic, particularly well-suited to the foundational narrative of The Hobbit, complemented by Treasure tokens that reflect the narrative significance of the gold of Erebor, a Dwarf-themed sub-theme, a notable presence of Trolls, and the return of the Sagas. Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin's company are at the heart of the set, on their journey to Erebor and their confrontation with the dragon Smaug.
To extend the experience after the Prerelease, The Hobbit Play Boosters (available individually, in packs of 10, or in a display of 30 with a Middle-earth Box Topper) remain the go-to format for drafting and opening in bulk. The Hobbit Bundle offers 9 Play Boosters and storage accessories to start a collection, and The Hobbit Collector Boosters focus on exclusive visual treatments including cards in Dwarven script and the ultra-rare variant Smaug the Magnificent Gleaming Gold limited to 500 copies.
